Rules of the Road
- When reversing on a hard shoulder, do it carefully.
- You may drive over a footpath if no pedestrians are near, to gain lawful access into a property, or when the pavement is very wide.
National Speed Limits
- The national speed limit outside built-up areas unless otherwise indicated is 100kph for cars and motorcycles.
- The national speed limit on dual carriageways unless otherwise indicated is 80kph for cars and motorcycles.
Driving Safety
- When driving along a street with parked vehicles, keep your speed down because children may run out from between the vehicles, drivers' doors may open, and vehicles may be pulling out.
- When meeting an obstruction on your side of the road, give way to oncoming traffic.
- When overtaking a tractor, do not overtake if you are in doubt.
Roundabouts
- Be aware that horse riders, long vehicles, and cyclists may take an unusual course at roundabouts.
Parking
- You should not leave your vehicle parked on a road with the engine running on any occasion.
- You must not park or wait in certain places, including on the slope of a hill.
Dual Carriageways
- When driving on a dual carriageway, you should not switch on your hazard lights or flash your headlights when slowing down quickly due to a hazard.
- Maintenance vehicles, breakdown recovery vehicles, and other specific vehicles are normally fitted with amber flashing beacons on the roof.
- Use the hard shoulder of a multi-lane carriageway only for stopping in an emergency or leaving the dual-carriageway.
- When rejoining the main carriageway from the hard shoulder after a breakdown, move out onto the carriageway using your hazard lights.
