Rizal's Studies at Ateneo de Manila

Study Notes

Rizal entered Ateneo Municipal in June 1872, after being late for registration due to illness.
The Ateneo used a Jesuit system of education, dividing students into two groups – “Roman Empire” and “Carthaginian Empire” – based on academic performance.
Rizal excelled in his first year at Ateneo, becoming an “externo” (outsider) and achieving the highest rank of “Emperor” in the “Roman Empire.”
Rizal spent his summer vacation of 1873 in Calamba before returning to Manila and boarding in Intramuros.
He continued his success in his second year, achieving another gold medal.
Rizal's interest in reading blossomed during his studies, with him exploring romantic novels, history, and travelogues.
In his fourth year, Rizal became an “interno” (resident) at Ateneo and was mentored by Fr. Francisco de Paula Sanchez, a highly respected teacher.
He graduated with the highest honors, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1877.
He was known for his excellence both in the classroom and as a leader in extra-curricular activities, including the Marian Congregation, the Academy of Spanish Literature, and the Academy of Natural Sciences.
Rizal also pursued artistic hobbies, studying painting and sculpture.
He created several sculptures at Ateneo, including the Virgin Mary and the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Rizal's success and personality were recalled by fellow students like Felix M. Roxas and Manuel Xeres Burgos.
Rizal's mother, Dona Teodora, discovered his poetic talent during his time at Ateneo.
