Study Notes
Rizal's Early Education
- Rizal's early education in Calamba and Biñan focused on the four R's: Reading, Writing, Arithmetic, and Religion.
- Teaching methods were rigid and relied heavily on rote memorization. Despite this, Rizal excelled and prepared for further studies.
- Rizal's mother, Doña Teodora, was his first teacher, instilling in him a love of reading and poetry. She also employed tutors, including Maestro Celestino, Maestro Lucas Padua, and Leon Monroy (who taught Spanish and Latin).
Rizal's Early Life: School and Beyond
- Rizal's first school day included a fight with a bully, Pedro, whom he defeated. Further conflicts followed showing a strong will, though not an aggressive nature.
- He received painting lessons from Juancho, a local painter, alongside his classmate Jose Guevarra.
- His daily life in Biñan was simple and methodical, contributing to his physical and mental development.
- Rizal was considered the best student in his school, excelling in Spanish and Latin despite jealousy from classmates who sometimes falsely accused him to the teacher.
- Rizal left Biñan in December 1870 after a year and a half, traveling by steamer for the first time to Calamba.
The Cavite Mutiny and the Martyrdom of Gomburza
- The Cavite Mutiny of 1872, a revolt by Filipino soldiers and workers, was quickly suppressed.
- The Spanish authorities used the mutiny to execute three prominent Filipino priests, Fathers Mariano Gomez, José Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora (Gomburza), who were leaders of the secularization movement advocating for Filipino control over the parishes.
- Gomburza's execution deeply affected Rizal and his family, inspiring his future fight against Spanish oppression. Rizal later dedicated his novel El Filibusterismo to their memory.
Injustice to Rizal's Mother
- In 1872, Doña Teodora was falsely accused of attempted poisoning by her brother's wife and was imprisoned for two and a half years, despite eventual acquittal. This injustice stemmed from a vengeful Spanish lieutenant and a local official, both previous guests at the Rizal home. The arrest resulted in a forced march from Calamba to Santa Cruz, a distance of 50 kilometers.
