Study Notes
RIT Responsibilities
- A deployed RIT utilizes an entry control board, including a search line tag, and develops a Search/Rescue Plan considering the point of entry, last known location, and tasks assigned to the RIT entry team.
- RIT provides timely reports to Command or RITSO, locates and identifies the firefighter involved with the MAYDAY, and assesses the situation.
- RIT provides emergency air or medical aids if needed and incident conditions allow, and utilizes a search line attached to the exterior of the IDLH in an obvious location.
- RIT removes the firefighter involved with the MAYDAY and announces benchmarks as they are achieved.
- Prior to deployment, RIT brings forward and sets up necessary equipment, is briefed by IRIT and ISO, monitors incident communications, familiarizes themselves with the structure/incident, and ensures a hose line is charged and ready to deploy.
RIT Sector Officer (RITSO) Responsibilities
- RITSO ensures the RIT is fully equipped, thoroughly briefs the team prior to entry, and is the primary radio contact for the RIT.
- RITSO provides a regular timeline (on-air time) to the deployed RIT, requests additional personnel and resources as required, and provides updates to Command, RIT, and Toronto Fire Communications.
- Upon deployment, RITSO announces all RIT benchmarks as they are achieved, provides updates to RIT Officer/personnel, ensures a new RIT is established, and ensures additional RIT search lines are used.
RIT Communications
- When an IRIT or RIT is deployed on a MAYDAY, Command notifies Toronto Fire Communications, who makes an announcement with alert tones on all channels operating at the incident.
- RIT operates on the channel the MAYDAY has been transmitted on, unless otherwise directed by Command.
- Benchmarks that need to be communicated via radio include RIT DEPLOYED, FIREFIGHTER LOCATED, FIREFIGHTER OUTSIDE, and RIT STOOD DOWN.
Demobilization of RIT
- RIT may be stood down by Command and/or when advised by the ISO, and may be assigned alternate tasks by the Incident Commander if they have been set up for less than one hour or environmental stress is not a factor.
