Study Notes

Network Topologies

Ring Topology

  • Consists of computers connected in a ring with data transferred in one direction through a control signal called a "Token".
  • Example: Ring Token Networks
  • Advantages: cheap to set up, easy to change size
  • Disadvantages: slow, singular malfunction in a cable can cause the whole network to fail, not flexible

Bus Topology

  • Consists of computers connected to a main bus cable where data is transmitted from one computer to another.
  • Example: Ethernet LANs
  • Advantages: easy to set up, cheap, flexible, easy to add/remove computers
  • Disadvantages: slow data transmission with many computers, performance decreases with heavy network traffic, entire network fails if bus cable malfunctions

Star Topology

  • Consists of computers connected to a central computer through a switch/hub.
  • Example: small office networks
  • Advantages: one computer malfunctioning doesn't affect the entire network, flexible, centralized management
  • Disadvantages: expensive to set up, requires many cables, entire network fails if switch or server malfunctions

Mesh Topology

  • Consists of computers connected to each other, allowing data to travel through the network in multiple ways.
  • Example: Military Communication Networks
  • Advantages: no single point of failure, redundant and fault-tolerant
  • Disadvantages: expensive and complex to set up
