Ribs Structure and Characteristics

  • Ribs are elongated, curved bones forming the lateral thoracic wall skeleton.
  • Each rib is a flat, curved plate with two extremities.

Ribs Classification

  • There are 13 pairs of ribs, divided into two categories: sternal ribs (7 pairs) and asternal ribs (5 pairs).
  • Sternal ribs articulate to the sternum via their cartilage.
  • Asternal ribs, also known as false ribs, do not articulate to the sternum.

Ribs Connection and Movement

  • Ribs articulate dorsally to vertebrae via costal cartilage.
  • The last ribs in the series, called floating ribs, have free, vented ends that are not attached to adjacent cartilages.

Intercostal Space

  • The space between ribs is called the intercostal space.

Ribs Shape and Orientation

  • The shaft of a rib is more curved at the upper part and twisted, inclined inward at the lower part.
