Study Notes
Rib Classification
- True ribs (vertebrosternal) are ribs 1-7, with direct attachment to the sternum.
- False ribs consist of two types:
- Vertebrochondrial: ribs 8 and 9, and part of rib 10, with indirect attachment to the sternum via cartilage.
- Vertebral: ribs 11 and 12, having no anterior attachment to the sternum.
Types of Ribs
- Vertebrosternal ribs have cartilage that directly connects to some part of the sternum.
- Vertebrochondrial ribs do not attach directly to the sternum; their cartilages merge with the cartilage of the superior rib.
- Vertebral ribs lack any anterior cartilage and do not attach to the sternum at all.
Individual Rib Attachments
- Rib 1 attaches to the manubrium of the sternum.
- Rib 2 connects to both the manubrium and the body of the sternum.
- Ribs 3, 4, 5, and 6 are all attached to the body of the sternum.
- Rib 7 attaches to the body of the sternum and partially to the xiphoid process.
- Rib 8's cartilage merges with that of rib 7.
- Rib 9's cartilage merges with the cartilage of rib 8.
- Rib 10's cartilage merges with that of rib 9.
- Ribs 11 and 12 have no anterior attachment to the sternum.
Rib Connections
- Ribs have two points of attachment: to thoracic vertebrae and to the transverse process of each vertebra.
