Study Notes
Kidney and Urinary Bladder Scanning
- Use a curvilinear transducer to achieve an anechoic/black appearance of the bladder
- Patients should drink water before the scan: 48 oz for females, 32 oz for males
- Scan the bladder in transverse and sagittal planes, starting from the midline and moving left to right or superior to inferior
- Rocky the transducer inferiorly if necessary
Prostate Examination
- Look for prostate enlargement or calcifications
- Check if the prostate bulges inward on the bladder
Testicular Ultrasound Imaging
- A chaperone should be present during the scan
- Drape the patient with one towel to hold the scrotum and another on top of the penis
- Scan each testicle from side to side and superior to inferior
- Transverse view (holding transducer horizontal): look for fluid or heterogeneity
- Sagittal view: examine one testicle to identify specific structures and any abnormalities
