Study Notes

Respiratory System

  • The respiratory system's primary function is exchanging gases, delivering oxygen and removing carbon dioxide.
  • It has an upper and lower tract.
  • The upper tract includes the nose, nasal cavity, and pharynx.
  • The lower tract involves the larynx, trachea, bronchial tubes, and lungs.

Nose and Nasal Cavity

  • The nose is the external part of the respiratory system, mostly cartilage for flexibility.
  • The nasal cavity's lining is moist due to mucus and tiny hairs filter out dust and dirt.
  • Air is warmed and moistened before entering the body.

Pharynx

  • The pharynx, also known as the throat, connects the nose and mouth to the trachea.
  • It acts as a passageway for both air and food.
  • Tonsils are found at the entrance of the pharynx, trapping and destroying bacteria.

Larynx

  • The larynx, or voice box, is located at the lower end of the pharynx.
  • Vocal cords vibrate to produce sound when speaking.
  • The epiglottis covers the larynx during swallowing to prevent food from entering the trachea.
  • Choking is caused by food entering the trachea instead of the esophagus.

Trachea

  • The trachea, or windpipe, is a tube lined with mucus that helps prevent dust and other materials from reaching the lungs.

Lungs

  • The trachea divides into two bronchi, each entering a lung.
  • Bronchi branch into smaller bronchioles, ending in tiny air sacs called alveoli.
  • Gas exchange (oxygen and carbon dioxide) occurs in the alveoli.
  • Oxygen is absorbed into the bloodstream, and carbon dioxide is exhaled.
