Study Notes

Respiratory System

  • Respiration is the process of exchanging oxygen and carbon dioxide.
  • The respiratory system includes the nose, pharynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs.
  • The lungs are composed of alveoli, tiny air sacs surrounded by capillaries.
  • Oxygen from inhaled air binds to hemoglobin in red blood cells and is transported to body tissues. Carbon dioxide from tissues is transported to the lungs for exhalation.
  • Vital capacity of the lungs is the maximum volume of air a person can exhale after a maximum inhalation.

Respiratory Diseases

  • Acute respiratory infections are caused by bacteria or viruses, or allergies.
  • Chronic respiratory illnesses are caused by exposure to dust, smoke or irritants.
  • Smoking damages the respiratory system, reduces lung capacity, and can cause lung cancer.
  • Sore throat (angina) is an inflammation of the pharynx and tonsils, often caused by bacteria or viruses.
  • Flu is a viral infection transmitted through droplets.
  • Bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchi, often caused by viruses.
  • Pneumonia is an inflammation of the lungs, caused by either bacteria or viruses.
  • Tuberculosis is a bacterial infection caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Vaccination against TB is recommended.
