Study Notes
Respiratory System
- Respiration is the process of exchanging oxygen and carbon dioxide.
- The respiratory system includes the nose, pharynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs.
- The lungs are composed of alveoli, tiny air sacs surrounded by capillaries.
- Oxygen from inhaled air binds to hemoglobin in red blood cells and is transported to body tissues. Carbon dioxide from tissues is transported to the lungs for exhalation.
- Vital capacity of the lungs is the maximum volume of air a person can exhale after a maximum inhalation.
Respiratory Diseases
- Acute respiratory infections are caused by bacteria or viruses, or allergies.
- Chronic respiratory illnesses are caused by exposure to dust, smoke or irritants.
- Smoking damages the respiratory system, reduces lung capacity, and can cause lung cancer.
- Sore throat (angina) is an inflammation of the pharynx and tonsils, often caused by bacteria or viruses.
- Flu is a viral infection transmitted through droplets.
- Bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchi, often caused by viruses.
- Pneumonia is an inflammation of the lungs, caused by either bacteria or viruses.
- Tuberculosis is a bacterial infection caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Vaccination against TB is recommended.
