Study Notes
Respiratory System
- The respiratory system consists of the following components:
- Nose
- Pharynx
- Larynx
- Trachea
- Bronchus
- Lung
Nose
- The nose has two portions:
- External portion
- Internal portion (nasal cavity)
- The internal portion has three regions:
- Vestibule
- Olfactory region
- Respiratory region
- The nasal septum separates the two sides of the nasal cavity
- The nasal cavity has several sinuses:
- Middle ethmoidal sinus
- Post-ethmoidal sinus
- Frontal sinus
- Sphenoidal sinus
- Ant-ethmoidal sinus
- Maxillary sinus
- The nasolacrimal duct connects the nasal cavity to the eye
Nasal Meatus
- The nasal cavity has three meatus (passages):
- Superior nasal meatus
- Middle nasal meatus
- Inferior nasal meatus
- The meatus connect to the sinuses:
- Post-ethmoidal sinus connects to the superior nasal meatus
- Ant-ethmoidal sinus, Middle ethmoidal sinus, Frontal sinus, and Maxillary sinus connect to the middle nasal meatus
- Nasolacrimal duct connects to the inferior nasal meatus
- The Sphenoethmoidal recess is a passage that connects to the Sphenoidal sinus
Pharynx
- The pharynx has three regions:
- Nasopharynx
- Oropharynx
- Laryngopharynx
- The pharynx contains:
- Pharyngeal tonsil (also known as the Third tonsil or Adenoid)
- Eustachian salpinx (also known as the Auditory tube or Pharyngotympanic tube)
- Salpingopharyngeus muscle
