Study Notes

Respiratory System

  • The respiratory system consists of the following components:
    • Nose
    • Pharynx
    • Larynx
    • Trachea
    • Bronchus
    • Lung

Nose

  • The nose has two portions:
    • External portion
    • Internal portion (nasal cavity)
  • The internal portion has three regions:
    • Vestibule
    • Olfactory region
    • Respiratory region
  • The nasal septum separates the two sides of the nasal cavity
  • The nasal cavity has several sinuses:
    • Middle ethmoidal sinus
    • Post-ethmoidal sinus
    • Frontal sinus
    • Sphenoidal sinus
    • Ant-ethmoidal sinus
    • Maxillary sinus
  • The nasolacrimal duct connects the nasal cavity to the eye

Nasal Meatus

  • The nasal cavity has three meatus (passages):
    • Superior nasal meatus
    • Middle nasal meatus
    • Inferior nasal meatus
  • The meatus connect to the sinuses:
    • Post-ethmoidal sinus connects to the superior nasal meatus
    • Ant-ethmoidal sinus, Middle ethmoidal sinus, Frontal sinus, and Maxillary sinus connect to the middle nasal meatus
    • Nasolacrimal duct connects to the inferior nasal meatus
  • The Sphenoethmoidal recess is a passage that connects to the Sphenoidal sinus

Pharynx

  • The pharynx has three regions:
    • Nasopharynx
    • Oropharynx
    • Laryngopharynx
  • The pharynx contains:
    • Pharyngeal tonsil (also known as the Third tonsil or Adenoid)
    • Eustachian salpinx (also known as the Auditory tube or Pharyngotympanic tube)
    • Salpingopharyngeus muscle

This quiz covers the different parts of the human respiratory system, including the nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchus, and lung. Test your knowledge of the anatomy of the respiratory system.
