- Procedures relate to the use, maintenance, and responsibilities associated with rescue ropes (lifelines) and utility ropes.
Rescue Ropes (Lifelines)
- Only to be used for rescue situations
- Should be Static Kernmantle ropes.
- ½ inches in diameter, 150 feet long, non-elongational, non-spinning, high abrasion resistance and tensile strength tested and approved for 9000 pounds
Knots
- The Figure 8 family cause less stress on rope
- Should be preferred for rescue ropes
Emergency Situations
- Can be used for all life-threatening situations including water rescue
- They do not float, polypropylene ropes shall be carried on apparatus in throw bags
Utility Ropes
- 3/8 inches in diameter.
- Tensile strength varies by manufacturer
- All situation-appropriate knots may be used
- Should not be used as a rescue rope.
Care and Maintenance

Station 1 Procedures
- Station 1 shall provide a "loaner" rope upon notification that a rope has been placed out-of-service and take possession of the out-of-service rope.
- Station 1 is responsible to evaluate, clean, test, and replace or re-issue the rope.
- Responsible to maintain a rope log including Company the rope is issued to, date of issue, lot number, length and color.
- Ropes returned for inspection shall be documented in the log, with the reason for the inspection in the “remarks” section (e.g. physical damage, contamination).
