What is the role of the hypothalamus in the female reproductive cycle?
What is the role of the hypothalamus in the female reproductive cycle?
- Initiates the reproductive process by releasing GnRH (correct)
- Stimulates the development of ovarian follicles
- Releases hormones such as FSH and LH
- Regulates the uterine cycle in response to pregnancy

Flashcards
Describe the Hormonal Pathway in the Female Reproductive Cycle.
Describe the Hormonal Pathway in the Female Reproductive Cycle.
The Hypothalamus releases GnRH which stimulates the Pituitary Gland to release FSH & LH. These hormones act on the Ovaries to produce Estrogen and Progesterone. These hormones then work on the Uterus to regulate the Uterine Cycle, which prepares the Uterus for pregnancy.
What is the Follicular Phase?
What is the Follicular Phase?
This phase is characterized by the maturation of ovarian follicles due to FSH, which results in the release of Estrogen. It occurs before ovulation.
What is the Luteal Phase?
What is the Luteal Phase?
This phase is characterized by the release of Progesterone after ovulation. The Corpus Luteum starts producing this important hormone.

Reproductive System Regulation Diagram
- Diagram presents a hormonal feedback loop regulating reproduction.
- Hypothalamus releases GnRH (Gonadotropin-releasing hormone), stimulating the pituitary gland.
- Pituitary gland releases FSH (Follicle-stimulating hormone) and LH (Luteinizing hormone).
- FSH stimulates follicle growth in the ovaries, producing estrogen.
- Estrogen, in turn, causes the hypothalamus to decrease GnRH release.
- LH triggers ovulation and development of the corpus luteum.
- Corpus luteum produces progesterone, maintaining the uterine lining.
- Progesterone also inhibits GnRH release.
- If no fertilization, corpus luteum breaks down, progesterone levels drop, and menstruation occurs.
- If fertilization occurs, the developing embryo secretes hormones to maintain the corpus luteum.
- Trophoblastine released by the developing embryo helps maintain the uterine lining.
- This diagram represents the interconnected elements of the hormonal cascade controlling the reproductive cycle.
- The diagram illustrates a negative feedback loop, with hormones regulating their own release.
- There are positive feedback loops involved too.
