Study Notes

Pathway of Sperm

  • Sperm production follows the SEVEn UP pathway:
    • Seminiferous tubules: Site of sperm production
    • Epididymis: Location for sperm maturation and storage
    • Vas deferens: Tube transporting sperm to urethra
    • Ejaculatory duct: Connects the vas deferens to the urethra
    • Urethra: Conducts sperm to exterior
    • Penis: Final exit point for sperm

Epididymis

  • Responsible for sperm maturation and storage, providing the necessary conditions for sperm to develop fully before ejaculation.

Vas Deferens

  • A muscular tube that transports sperm from the epididymis to the urethra, playing a critical role in the male reproductive system.

Prostate Gland

  • Contributes to seminal fluid, nourishing and protecting sperm; plays a significant role in fertility.

Erectile Tissue

  • Corpora Cavernosa: Paired erectile tissues that fill with blood during arousal, contributing to penis erection.
  • Corpus Spongiosum: Surrounds the urethra and keeps it open for ejaculation, also engorges with blood but to a lesser degree than corpora cavernosa.

Glans Penis

  • The head of the penis, highly sensitive and important for sexual pleasure.

Frenulum

  • Indentation located on the underside of the penis; known as the most sensitive area and classified as an erogenous zone.

Sperm Production

  • Occurs in the seminiferous tubules, where spermatagonia develop into sperm cells.

Cells in Seminiferous Tubules

  • Spermatagonia: Stem cells that give rise to sperm cells.
  • Sertoli Cells: Provide support and nourishment to developing sperm cells.

Cells Between Tubules

  • Leydig Cells: Located between seminiferous tubules, these produce hormones, primarily testosterone, essential for male reproductive development.
