Reproduction in Humans
- Humans reproduce through reproductive organs called gonads
- Male gonads are testes, female are ovaries
- Gonads produce reproductive cells called gametes
- Eggs are female gametes, sperm are male gametes
Male Reproductive System
- Consists of a pair of testes, two vas deferens (sperm ducts), and a penis
- Testes produce millions of sperms
- Sperm has a head, middle piece, and a long tail
- The tail helps sperm swim to reach the egg
- Sperms travel to the penis via the sperm duct
- Penis injects sperms into the female
- Organs are located outside the body in a scrotal sac
Female Reproductive System
- Consists of a pair of ovaries, two oviducts (fallopian tubes), and the uterus
- Ovaries produce female gametes called ova (eggs)
- Ovaries release 1 egg per month
- Ovaries also produce estrogen
- Estrogen is responsible for secondary sexual characteristics
- Secondary sexual characteristics in females include breast enlargement, hip development, pubic hair growth, and voice change
- Menstrual cycle begins after 28-30 days
