    Study Notes

    Reproduction in Humans

    • Humans reproduce through reproductive organs called gonads
    • Male gonads are testes, female are ovaries
    • Gonads produce reproductive cells called gametes
    • Eggs are female gametes, sperm are male gametes

    Male Reproductive System

    • Consists of a pair of testes, two vas deferens (sperm ducts), and a penis
    • Testes produce millions of sperms
    • Sperm has a head, middle piece, and a long tail
    • The tail helps sperm swim to reach the egg
    • Sperms travel to the penis via the sperm duct
    • Penis injects sperms into the female
    • Organs are located outside the body in a scrotal sac

    Female Reproductive System

    • Consists of a pair of ovaries, two oviducts (fallopian tubes), and the uterus
    • Ovaries produce female gametes called ova (eggs)
    • Ovaries release 1 egg per month
    • Ovaries also produce estrogen
    • Estrogen is responsible for secondary sexual characteristics
    • Secondary sexual characteristics in females include breast enlargement, hip development, pubic hair growth, and voice change
    • Menstrual cycle begins after 28-30 days

    Sperm Structure & Function

    • Sperm is tadpole-shaped with a head, mid-piece, and tail
    • Tail helps sperm swim
    • Important for reaching the egg
