Study Notes
Renewable Energy
- Renewable energy is derived from the earth's natural resources that are not finite or exhaustible, such as wind and sunlight.
- It is an alternative to traditional energy that relies on fossil fuels, and tends to be much less harmful to the environment.
Solar Energy
- Solar panels convert solar/photon energy into electricity through the photovoltaic effect.
- When a photon hits a photovoltaic/solar cell device, its energy is transferred to the electrons in the material, producing an electric current.
Solar PV Categories
- There are two main categories of solar PV:
- Grid-connected (GCPV)
- Stand-alone/Off-grid (SAPV/OGPV)
Grid-Connected PV (GCPV)
- A GCPV system is an electricity generating solar PV power system connected to the utility grid.
- Designed to operate with the electric utility grid.
- Primary components include PV arrays and BOS (Balance of System) components.
- Examples of GCPV systems include rooftop installations (e.g., 4.14kWp in Penang).
Stand-alone/Off-grid PV (SAPV)
- A SAPV system is an off-the-grid electricity system for locations that are not fitted with an electricity distribution system.
- Designed to operate independent of the electric utility grid.
- Commonly installed in remote locations with no electric utility grid.
- Supply DC and/or AC electrical loads.
- Can be configured in several ways, such as direct-coupled systems or hybrid systems with battery energy storage.
- Examples of SAPV systems include hybrid systems (e.g., 276kWp in Semporna, Sabah).
Malaysia Renewable Energy Target
- The Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources of Malaysia set a target to reach 31% of RE share in the national installed capacity mix by 2025.
- This target supports Malaysia's global climate commitment to reduce its economy-wide carbon intensity by 45% in 2030 compared to 2005 levels.
