Relative Pronouns and Relative Clauses
- Relative pronouns connect clauses to nouns
- Introduce clauses that provide more detail
- Relate to nouns mentioned earlier in the sentence
Types of Relative Pronouns
- Who: Used for people. Can be the subject or object of the verb
- Whom: Used for people. Always the object of the verb (More formal)
- Whose: Shows possession
- Which: Used for animals or things
- That: Used for people, animals or things. (More informal, can be used in defining clauses)
Relative Pronouns: WHEN, WHERE, WHY
- When: Used to indicate time
- Where: Used to indicate place
- Why: Used to indicate reason
Defining Relative Clauses
- Contain essential information about the noun
- Cannot be omitted without changing the meaning of the sentence
- Usually no commas
- Examples include "The man who is downstairs is my brother".
- Examples include "The book that I bought yesterday is new"
Non-Defining Relative Clauses
- Provide additional, but not essential information
- Can be omitted without changing the sentence's meaning (often added with commas)
- Examples include "My brother, who is a doctor, is leaving town".
- Examples include "My car, which is red, is parked over there."
Typical Errors in Using Relative Pronouns
- Using "that" instead of "who," "whom," or "which" in non-defining clauses
- Using "what" as a relative pronoun
- Using "who" to refer to things
