Study Notes
- Regular verbs in the past tense follow a predictable pattern
- Regular verbs in the past tense are typically formed by adding "-ed" to the base form of the verb
Forming the Past Tense of Regular Verbs
- Most regular verbs simply add "-ed" to the base form (or infinitive without "to") to create the past tense
- Example: "walk" becomes "walked"
- For regular verbs that already end in "e", just add "-d"
- Example: "bake" becomes "baked"
- If a one-syllable verb ends in a consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) pattern, double the final consonant before adding "-ed"
- Example: "hop" becomes "hopped"
- This rule generally applies to verbs that have a short vowel sound
- For verbs with two or more syllables, double the final consonant only if the stress is on the last syllable
- Example: "admit" becomes "admitted" (stress on "mit"), but "visit" becomes "visited" (stress on "vis")
- If a verb ends in "y" preceded by a consonant, change the "y" to "i" and add "-ed"
- Example: "cry" becomes "cried"
- If the "y" is preceded by a vowel, simply add "-ed"
- Example: "play" becomes "played"
