Regular Verbs

  • Formed using the base form of the verb + -ed (except for verbs that end in -e, which only add -d)
  • Examples:
    • Base form: walk → Past simple: walked
    • Base form: play → Past simple: played
    • Base form: love → Past simple: loved
  • Spelling rules:
    • Verbs that end in -y, change the -y to -i and add -ed (e.g. try → tried)

Irregular Verbs

  • Do not follow the regular -ed pattern
  • Must be memorized
  • Examples:

  • Subject + Verb (in the past simple form) + Object (optional)
  • Examples:

  • Used to indicate when an action took place in the past
  • Examples:
    • Yesterday: I went to the park.

  • Common time expressions:

    • Last night
    • This morning/afternoon/evening
    • In [year/month/season]
