General Rules

Badminton is a racquet sport played by either two opposing players (singles) or two opposing pairs (doubles).
The objective is to hit a shuttlecock over a net and into the opponent's court, forcing them to fail to return it.
Points are scored when the opponent fails to return the shuttlecock correctly.
The game is played on a rectangular court divided by a net.

Scoring

Points are scored when a player wins a rally.
A rally begins when a player serves the shuttlecock.
A player wins a point if the shuttlecock lands in the opponent's court, or if the opponent commits a fault.
A fault can include hitting the shuttlecock outside the court boundaries, or hitting it incorrectly.

Serving Rules

The serve must be made underhand.
The shuttlecock must be hit below the server's waist.
The server must hit the shuttlecock diagonally across the net during the serve.
The server and receiver must stand in opposite service court halves.

Other Rules

Players are not authorized to touch the net with their body during play.
A player is not permitted to hit the shuttlecock in motion twice consecutively.
The shuttlecock must land within the boundary lines when playing.
Faults occurring during a rally are called by the umpire or referee.

Court Dimensions

The court dimensions and boundaries are defined for each type of play (singles or doubles).
A badminton court varies in size in its length and width.

Shuttlecock

The shuttlecock or birdie is the projectile used in a badminton game.
It is made up of feathers attached to a cork or plastic base.
The feathers determine air resistance.
The specifications of the shuttlecock are regulated.

Equipment

Equipment required for badminton includes racquets, shuttlecocks, and appropriate court markings.
Players should wear suitable clothing and footwear depending on their preference.
The racquets used should comply with regulations.

Gameplay

A game begins with a coin toss to determine the server.
The game proceeds with points being played in rally-style.
Points are won depending on the rules defined for a badminton match.
Matches are played to a predetermined number of games.

Disqualification

A player can be disqualified for infractions such as unsportsmanlike conduct, or for repeatedly violating the rules.
Dishonest actions and misconduct will be duly noted.

Umpire and Linesmen/women

Umpires or referees in badminton matches are responsible for deciding on the outcomes of points or rallies.
Linesmen/women are responsible for calling if the shuttlecock lands within or outside a court boundary.

Rally Scoring and Length

Players win a point by forcing the opposing player to fail to correctly return the shuttlecock during a rally.
The rally proceeds until one player fails to return the shuttlecock, or otherwise commits a fault.
Matches can determine their length for differing situations.
