Study Notes
Red Blood Cell Formation
- All blood cells develop from a common progenitor cell, also known as a stem cell, located in the bone marrow.
- The development process is called hematopoiesis.
- 100 billion cells are produced in the bone marrow every day.
- In adults, the most active bone marrow is found in the vertebrae, sternum, and ribs.
- In children, bone marrow in the long bones is more active.
- Old red blood cells are destroyed as they pass through tight spaces in the circulation, particularly in the spleen.
- Macrophages in the spleen, liver, bone marrow, and lymph nodes facilitate the destruction of red blood cells.
Hemoglobin
- Hemoglobin (Hb) is the red, oxygen-carrying pigment found in red blood cells.
- Hb found in normal adult humans is called HbA.
- The average Hb level is 15gm% (16gm% in males and 14gm% in females).
Diet for Erythropoiesis
- A balanced diet is crucial for normal erythropoiesis.
- The diet should include:
- Protein of high biological value
- Vitamin B12 and folic acid
- Minerals such as copper and cobalt
- Iron
