Reading & Writing: Quarter 3, Weeks 1-2
- The focus of this quarter is reading and writing, covering weeks 1 and 2.
- Students are asked to provide a book title they have read previously.
- Students are also asked to suggest a title for a book they might write themselves.
- A review of the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) is presented.
- Reading is defined as the process of converting letters and symbols into understandable information for use in everyday life.
- Parents are the primary encouragers of reading, with 96% of youth and 94% of Filipino adults enjoying reading. Filipinos mainly read to learn new things.
- Writing is defined as both a process and a product in which writers plan, create, edit drafts of work, and publish it for the audience to consume.
- Students are asked to consider if reading can save the Filipinos.
- Reading and writing reinforce each other; Students who read more write better.
- The current lesson examines patterns of development in writing.
- Patterns of development in writing use specific strategies used by writers in developing their ideas; Writers utilize these based on the purpose.

- The subtopics for this period include narration and description.
Narration
- Concisely telling a story
- Narrative writing is a sequence of events (not necessarily in order) told by a narrator in a particular place and time.
- Vivid details, consistent point of view, and a specific significance point aid in the narration.
- Narrative writing includes the use of several writing tools to assist in this process including, but not limited to: anecdote, flashback, time stretch, time summary, flash forward, and dialogue
Description
- Details what something Looks Like, or its characteristics with a focus on the sensory aspects ( looks, feels, tastes, smells, or sounds).
- Two types of description:
- Objective description: impartial and factual, excluding personal feeling or opinions.
- Subjective description: includes personal impressions and opinions
Week 3-4: Patterns of Development in Writing
- The focus for this period is on comparison/contrast, cause and effect, problem/solution, and persuasion.
