    Study Notes

    Rapid Intervention Teams (RIT)

    • All Spring Fire Department personnel must comply with this guideline.
    • This guideline is reviewed annually by the Fire Chief or designee.
    • The guideline applies to all incidents where firefighters are in danger.
    • The Incident Commander is responsible for the establishment and activation of RIT(s) during emergency operations.
    • A minimum of three firefighters, ideally four, are required to constitute a RIT.
    • RIT members must wear full PPE with SCBA, including face pieces.
    • RITs should assemble close to firefighting operations, but not impede them.
    • RITs must report to the Division Officer or Incident Commander.
    • RITs have specific responsibilities, such as:
      • Assembling equipment and tools for rescue operations.
      • Verifying alternative escape routes and potential hazards.
      • Confirming rear and/or side doors are unlocked and usable.
      • Ensuring adequate scene illumination.
      • Continuously evaluating fire conditions and structural integrity.
      • Monitoring primary fireground radio traffic and communicating with the Accountability Officer.
    • RITs will be deployed to find, locate and extricate any firefighters that are in a MAYDAY situation.
    • When a MAYDAY is declared:
      • The RIT will immediately communicate with the Incident Commander to determine the MAYDAY firefighter's last known location.
      • The RIT will communicate with the Incident Commander and Safety Officer before entering the structure.
      • The RIT will enter the structure closest to the MAYDAY firefighter's last known location and begin RIT duties.
      • The RIT Officer will provide regular CAN reports to the Division Officer or Incident Commander.
    • Self-survival actions taken by a MAYDAY firefighter that will assist RITs with their duties:
      • Manually activate T-Pass and PASS devices
      • Assume a horizontal position
      • Use tools or objects to make tapping noises on a hard surface
      • Direct a flashlight towards the ceiling
      • Find an area of refuge along an exterior wall or adjoining room not immediately threatened by fire
      • Identify means of possible self-rescue
    • Upon locating the MAYDAY firefighter:
      • Immediately silence any alarming pass devices.
      • Stay together as a crew.
      • Ensure to communicate with the Division Officer or Incident Commander.
    • The RIT officer is responsible for monitoring radio traffic and providing updates on the MAYDAY situation.
    • If a RIT is deployed for a rescue, additional RITs should be immediately assigned to relieve the deployed RIT or assist with the rescue operation.
    • Assign a Division Officer to command multiple RITs, freeing up the Incident Commander.
    • The Incident Commander is responsible for assigning RITs as soon as possible following the entry of firefighters into a hazard area.
    • One additional engine company should be dispatched to all confirmed structure fires to provide additional firefighters and ensure there is at least one RIT.
