New Kingdom
- 19th Dynasty comprised eight rulers (seven kings and one queen)
- Ramesside era: named after the many rulers with the name Ramses
- Ramses I: became king by default, a vizier and confidant of Horemheb; no royal blood; possibly in his fifties; came from eastern Delta; was a career army officer
- Short reign; only 2nd pylon at Karnak and a stele at Wadi Halfa remain
- 1817: Belzoni discovered KV 16 (tomb); unfinished, robbed; mummy not identified; believed mummy found at Luxor Museum, unidentified
- Queen Sitre: not buried with her husband in a separate tomb at Valley of the Queens (QV 38)

- Modeled royal titles after Ahmose
- Built temples in Nubia and Palestine, Karnak (great hall of columns), and other constructions completed by successors
