    Study Notes

    Types of Renewals

    • There are three types of renewals: scattered renewals, casual renewals, and through fitting renewals.
    • Scattered renewals involve replacing unserviceable rails, sleepers, and fastenings in isolated locations, with a maximum of 10 rails and/or 250 sleepers in a gang beat in a year.
    • Casual renewals involve replacing unserviceable rails, sleepers, and fastenings with identical sections of serviceable and nearly the same vintage or new track components in isolated locations of continuous but small stretches.
    • Through fitting renewals involve replacing liners and GRSPs/CGRSPs without replacing ERCs.

    Factors Governing Permanent Way Renewal

    • Criteria for rail renewal include the incidence of rail fractures/failures, wear on rails, maintainability of track to prescribed standards, expected service life in terms of Gross Million Tonnes of traffic carried, and plan-based renewals.
    • Incidence of rail fractures/failures, particularly in sections with 5 withdrawals of rails per 10 km in a year due to fracture and/or rail flaws detected ultrasonically, takes priority in deciding rail renewals.
    • Verification of proposals by the Track Cell in the Chief Engineer’s Office involves coordinating proposals, framing programs, deciding priority, and satisfying that the renewal is unavoidable.

    Track Standards for Renewals

    • The recommended section of rail to be adopted for track renewals is in accordance with Para 205.
    • Rails should be ultrasonically tested before use, and kinked rails must be jim-crowed and straightened.
    • Punch marks on rails or marking by chisel should be prohibited as they cause incipient failures.

    Methods of Carrying out Renewal

    • Complete track renewal can be carried out by using mechanical equipment or manual methods.
    • Detailed instructions shall be issued by the Assistant Divisional Engineer regarding the method of relaying, which depends on site conditions and machine availability.

    Manual Method of Relaying

    • The method can be followed for single rail, 3 rail panel, and LWR track.
    • Precautions described in Para 346 & 347 should be followed for LWR track.
    • Any modification in the layout of passenger lines should be carried out with the sanction of the Commissioner of Railway Safety.

    Relaying Points and Crossings

    • Particular care should be taken to effect improvements in the lay out while relaying points and crossings.
    • Renewal should be carried out with standard rail sections, in accordance with standard drawings.
    • At least one rail length on either side of the turnout should have the same section of rail as the turnout.
    • References must be fixed for the center line of the new assembly, with accurate fixing of the inter-section point of the turnout track and the main line track.
