    Study Notes

    Gauge Measurement

    • There are two types of gauge sensors used on Indian Railways: contact gauge sensors (up to 100 kmph) and contactless laser-based gauge sensors (up to 160 kmph).

    Quick Calibration, Recording, and Speed

    • The track recording car must be calibrated before each run, during daylight hours only.
    • The car must run through main lines at all stations, and its speed should be at least 20 kmph for accurate recording.
    • Recording is considered "non-recorded" if done below 20 kmph.

Arrangements for Running Track Recording Car

    • The zonal railways arrange for power, crew, and consumables for the Track Recording Car, following the RDSO program.
    • ADENs and SSEs at originating/halting stations coordinate for proper placement, watering, and charging of the Track Recording Car.

Officials to Accompany the TRC Run

    • Sectional Sr.DEN/DEN, ADEN, and SSE/P.Way (In-charge) accompany the TRC run in their sections.

    Frequency of Track Recording

    • The frequency of track geometry monitoring by TRC depends on the speed slab:
      • Routes above 130 kmph: every 2 months
      • Routes above 110 kmph and up to 130 kmph: every 3 months
      • Routes above 100 kmph and up to 110 kmph: every 4 months
      • Routes up to 100 kmph: every 6 months

Track Geometry Parameters Recorded by TRC

    • The Track Recording Cars measure the following track geometry parameters:
      • Unevenness of left and right rail
      • Alignment of left and right rail
      • Twist
      • Variation of gauge over nominal gauge (1676 mm for IR)
      • Vertical and lateral accelerations on coach floor above bogie pivot
      • Curve details (only in contactless laser-based TRCs)
      • Speed of recording

    Chords for Measurements/Report

    • Both types of TRCs can measure and calculate track geometry parameters on two user-selectable chords/bases (short and long).

    Frequency of OMS Recording

    • The frequency of OMS recording depends on the route speed:
      • Routes above 100 kmph: once a month
      • Other routes: once every two months

    Recording of Defects

    • Vertical and lateral acceleration peaks exceeding certain values are considered defects:
      • On routes above 110 kmph: greater than 0.15 g
      • On other routes: greater than 0.2 g

    Classification of Track Quality

    • Track quality is classified based on the average total number of peaks per km:
      • Very Good: less than 1.0 (above 110 kmph) or less than 1.5 (others)
      • Good: 1-2 (above 110 kmph) or 1.5-3.0 (others)
      • Average: greater than 2 (above 110 kmph) or greater than 3 (others)

    Oscillograph Car

    • The Oscillograph Car monitors riding quality of track at maximum sanctioned speed.
    • Sectional Sr.DEN/DEN reviews the need for maintenance of track based on OMS recording and other considerations.

    Realignment Criteria for Curves

    • The running over a curve depends on the difference between actual and designed versine values, and the station-to-station variation of actual versine values.
    • The limits of station-to-station variation of versine values depend on the speed of the curve.
