    Study Notes

    Radiologic Technologists

    • Assist radiologists during specialized contrast media procedures like myelography and arthrography.
    • Complete academic requirements in Associate in Radiologic Technology and Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Technology (BSRT) to become a registered radiographer.

    Registered Radiologic Technologist

    • Abbreviation: RXT or RRT.
    • Recognized by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC).

    Ionizing and Non-ionizing Radiation

    Discovery of X-Rays

    • November 8, 1895, by Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen, a German physicist.
    • Experimenting with cathode rays and properties outside glass tubes (Crooke's Tube) at the University of Wurzburg, Germany.
    • Observed that a screen painted with barium platinocyanide was emitting light (fluorescence) when brought close to the tube.

    Characteristics of X-Ray Discovery

    • Accidental discovery.
    • Contemporaries of Roentgen had observed x-radiation but did not recognize its significance.
    • Roentgen investigated it with scientific vigor, describing x-radiation with nearly all its properties within a month.

    Pioneers of Radiology

    • William Crookes: furthered the study of cathode rays and demonstrated that matter was emitted from the cathode with enough energy to rotate a wheel.
    • Philipp Lenard: investigated cathode rays, finding they could penetrate thin metal and project into air, and studied deflection as a result of magnetic fields.
    • William Goodspeed: produced a radiograph in 1890, but was not credited with the discovery of x-rays.
    • Richard Leach Maddox: produced a film with a gelatin silver bromide emulsion.
    • George Eastman: produced and patented roll-paper film.

    Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen

    • Born on March 27, 1845, in Lennep, Germany.
    • Married Bertha Ludwig in 1872.
    • Worked at the University of Wurzburg, where he discovered x-rays.

    Early X-Ray Images

    • First medical x-ray image in the United States was taken from a patient who broke his wrist skating on the Connecticut River.
