    Study Notes

    Radiation Exposure and Accidents

    • If a student receives higher than normal levels of radiation, they should inform the Clinical Liaison and Clinical Coordinator immediately, and appropriate action will be taken depending on the circumstances.
    • In case of an accident involving injury to themselves or a patient, a student should seek assistance/treatment if required, contact the HST department at COSTAATT, give aid/assurance to the patient if appropriate, report the incident immediately to the On-Site registered Radiographer/Clinical Coordinator, and complete an Accident/Incident Report form.

    Pregnancy and Maternity Leave

    • If a student suspects she may be pregnant and wishes to continue her studies, she must inform the Chair of the Health and Medical Technologies Department immediately, and will then be reassigned from fluoroscopic areas until a pregnancy test has been completed.
    • If a student is pregnant, she will not rotate through certain areas during the gestation period.
    • A physician must provide in writing the expected date of confinement and any restrictions to be imposed on participation in the programme after a first-trimester examination.
    • Maternity leave from the programme will be granted as appropriate, and the student must provide the Health Science Technologies Department with her expected length and timing of maternity leave.
    • After maternity leave, the student will be allowed to continue in the appropriate semester of the Radiography programme, subject to COSTAATT regulations.
    • All missed participation in the programme must be made up by the student after the pregnancy but before graduation from the programme.

    Overseas Clinical Practicum

    • The Overseas Clinical Practicum is a voluntary part of Clinical Practicum 4 (RAD 364) Year 3, allowing students to gain useful experience in a country other than Trinidad & Tobago, draw comparisons between different healthcare systems, and gain knowledge and experience with specialized equipment or routines.
    • The Department of Health Science Technologies negotiates with suitable overseas clinical sites, and students are notified of available sites and their conditions.
    • Clinical sites are asked to complete a Summative Evaluation of Student Performance, and students must submit individual reports upon their return.

    Clinical Attendance and Assessments

    • Clinical practice is compulsory, and a prescribed number of clinical practice days are required for each practicum.
    • Students must complete all prescribed days, keep attendance records, and inform the Clinical Coordinator and Clinical Liaison of any absences.
    • All forms of assessment must be completed by the due date, and failure to comply will result in penalties, including a 10% reduction of marks per day and a fail grade recorded after the tenth day.

    Scent Sensitivity Policy

    • Students are asked to limit their use of highly scented cosmetic products while interacting with staff and patients in the clinical setting, as hospitals and health care facilities should reduce all sources of asthmagens, including fragrances and scents.
