QM - Quartermaster (Ship’s Helm) Duties

Deck/Gunnery Officer

• Performs collateral duties: Cargo Officer, Special Service Officer, Athletic Officer, and Mess and Supply Officer

Mess and Supply Officer

• Responsible for procuring, receiving, storing, issuing, shipping, transferring, and accounting for all stores, provisions, and equipment of the command
• Maintains equipment while in custody

Chief Master-at-Arms (CMAA)

• Assists the Officer of the Deck (OOD) in executing ship's routine
• Supervises extra duty men and men performing punishments
• Performs duties related to rigging and unrigging for special functions and preparing delinquency reports
• Maintains a lucky bag and furnishes escorts for the CO, EXO, and visitors as directed
• Renders 8 o'clock reports if not designated to BMW or DPOW
• Ensures safety and welfare of prisoners at the brig
• Conducts frequent inspections of the ship to ensure adherence to ship's regulations and instructions

Quartermaster (QM)

• Assists the navigator and Officer of the Deck (OOD)
• Steers the ship, takes radar bearings and ranges, and makes depth soundings and celestial observations
• Plots courses and commands small craft
• Maintains charts, navigational aids, and oceanographic publications and records for the ship's log reports
• Maintains files and service records

Boatswain's Mate (BM)

• Trains and supervises personnel in marlinespike, deck, and boat seamanship, and maintenance of the ship's external structure and deck equipment

Electronics Technician (ET)

• Responsible for electronic equipment used for sending and receiving messages, detecting enemy planes and ships, and determining target distances
• Maintains, repairs, calibrates, tunes, and adjusts all electronic equipment used for communications, detection, and tracking, recognition, and identification, navigation, and electronic countermeasures

Disbursing Clerk (DK)

• Maintains financial records of Navy personnel
• Prepares payrolls, determines transportation entitlements, and computes travel allowances and processes claims for reimbursement of travel expenses
• Processes vouchers for receiving and spending public money and ensures accounting data is accurate
• Maintains fiscal records and prepares financial reports and returns

Hospital Corpsman (HM)

• Performs various medical duties, including first aid and minor surgery, patient transportation, patient care, prescriptions, and laboratory work
• Conducts food service inspections and clerical duties

Machinist's Mate (MR)

• Operates main propulsion machinery and performs machine shop and repair duties

Builder (BU)

• Performs duties similar to civilian construction workers, including carpentry, plastering, roofing, cement finishing, and more
• Builds and repairs various types of structures, including piers, bridges, towers, and buildings

Photographer's Mate (PH)

• Photographs actual and simulated battle operations and makes photo records of historic and newsworthy events for the Navy
• Exposes and processes light-sensitive negatives and positives, maintains cameras, related equipment, photo files, and records

Aviation Machinist's Mate (AD)

• Maintains turbo-jet aircraft engines and associated equipment
• Performs various aircraft maintenance activities
