Public Cloud: Deployment Models

Public cloud refers to computing services offered by third-party providers over the internet, available to anyone who wants to use or purchase them. There are three main deployment models for public cloud services: Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS), and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS).

Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS)

IaaS providers supply a virtual server instance and storage. They offer flexibility and scalability, allowing users to quickly adjust their infrastructure to meet changing demands. Examples of IaaS providers include Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud.

Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS)

PaaS offers a platform to develop, run, and manage applications without the complexity of building and maintaining the infrastructure typically associated with developing and launching an app. PaaS providers manage the underlying infrastructure, including servers, storage, and networking, allowing developers to focus on building and deploying their applications.

Software-as-a-Service (SaaS)

SaaS refers to applications that are delivered over the internet, typically on a subscription basis. These applications can be accessed through a web browser, eliminating the need for users to install and maintain software on their own devices. Examples of SaaS applications include Salesforce, Google Workspace, and Microsoft Office 365.

Public cloud services are characterized by their ability to rapidly scale resources, as cloud providers have vast amounts of computing power that they share between a large number of customers. This flexibility makes public clouds ideal for less-sensitive applications that demand varying amounts of resources. However, public clouds also raise concerns about security and data privacy, as the data is stored on servers owned and managed by the cloud provider.
