Public Health in Australia
- Colonial era intervention models included Quarantine and Public Health Acts to provide clean water and sanitation.
- The Nation-building era (1890-1940s) was focused on improving the nation’s health by improving the race.
- Health was linked to vitality, efficiency, purity and virtue.
- State involvement in public health from 1880-1930 was influenced by the germ theory and biotechnological advances.
- There was state involvement in hospitals and clinical services.
- Infectious diseases declined.
- The Therapeutic Era (1950s-1970s) saw developments in clinical medicine and belief that medicine would conquer disease.
- There was considerable state intervention in housing, education and advanced Health services.
- The Lifestyle Era (1960-1980) focused on the effects of affluence in terms of chronic disease.
- Lifestyle programs were modeled on North American Heart Health programs.
- Challenges to the Therapeutic Era (1970s) began with increases in health care costs and 'lifestyle' diseases such as critique of scientific medicine and social reform.
- The New Public Health (mid-1980s to mid-1990s) is influenced by the World Health Organization policies.
- It includes a focus on collective measures, poverty, and social justice.
- The Global New Public Health (mid-1990s to twenty-first century had recognition of the impact of global financial bodies.
Current Public Health Landscape

- UQ Student Toolbox for Achieving Resilience is a positive psychology program.
- It teaches undergraduate public health students key mental health skills.
- It was trialled last year in PUBH1102 and the Evaluation is led by James Fowler and Dr Tarli Young.
UQ STAR in 2025
- Public health interventions require a strong evidence base.
- There is a re-sampling of PUBH1102 students as a “control” to understand UQ STAR's mental health influence and insights into how public health interventions are evaluated.
- There wil be two brief surveys in week 2 and 10.
Referencing
- Knowing how to reference is important for PUBH1102/ Bachelor of Health Sciences students.
- Academic sources are things like peer reviewed works, papers, and government sources.
- Referencing gives credit to sources, helps readers find the source, validates arguments, and demonstrates knowledge.
- Source credibility can be verified by assessing the source, author, date, supporting sources, biases, and whether it is a joke.
- Citing and referencing is not new.
- References provide full details to locate the source and appear at the end of articles or books.
- A citation acknowledges references in text.
- Take full bibliographic details, avoid plagiarism, add source details, and confirm details to maintain academic integrity.
- APA 7th Referencing Style is used in PUBH1102.

- Anatomy of journal and book references.
- Reference lists should be alphabetically by author's last name, and include URLs/DOIs.
- If there are 3 or more authors, use "et al." in citations
- Abbreviate the group author if well-known, and used at least three times in an assignment.
- Cite the original source clearly to avoid repetition.
- Include the author, year, and page number for quotations.
- Refer to another source - cite it. The only things not cited are your own ideas etc.
- It is suggested to use a citation every time.
- Cite one or two sources for each key point, and every sentence needs a reference.

- The #1 Rule is to manually check reference lists and in-text citations.

- In UQ Library search the "citation" option is available.
- Citations can be formatted using Google Scholar.
- There are caveats about referencing software and AI, cautioning is advised
