• refers to the idea that a segment of the deepest unconscious mind is genetically inherited and not shaped by personal experience. • it is common to human being and is responsible for several deep-seated beliefs and instincts, such as spirituality, sexual behavior, and life and death instinct.

COLLECTIVE UNCONSCIOUS

• include the persona, the shadow, the anima/animus, the self, and the hero. • describes as model of people, behavior, values and personalities

THE PERSONA, THE SHADOW, THE ANIMA OR ANIMUS,

Greek word for "mask" or one's public image. it is how we present ourselves to the world; represents all the different social masks that we wear among various groups and situations. it acts to shield the ego from negative images; over the course of development, children learn that they must behave in certain ways to fit in with society's expectations and norms.

THE PERSONA

consists of sex and life instincts, exists as part of the unconscious mind and is composed of repressed ideas, weaknesses, desires, instincts, and shortcomings; it contains things that are not acceptable not only to our society, but also to one's personal moral and values such as envy, greed, prejudice, hate and aggression.

THE SHADOW

a feminine image in the male psyche

these archetypal images are based upon both what is found in the collective and personal unconscious.

may contain notions about how women should behave

involve a distortion of reality in some way so that we are better able to cope with a situation.

DISPLACEMENT

is an unconscious act of taking unwanted emotions or traits you don't like or refuse to accept about yourself and attributing them to someone else.

PROJECTION

a person will block out painful or overwhelming feelings and emotions in situations where they experience them. you often have no control over the thoughts and emotions you repress.

REPRESSION

involves a person adopting the thoughts and behaviors of a person who has power over them.

IDENTIFICATION

is a positive defense mechanism. people who use it will substitute their more aggressive or problematic impulses with healthier and more positive alternatives.

SUBLIMATION

people use reason, logic, and facts to avoid uncomfortable feelings or situations. many times, people use this to avoid dealing with their emotions. for instance, they might justify cheating on a test because they needed the grade to graduate.

INTELLECTUALIZATION

• is how an individual choses to display their personality to others. anything that helps a person outwardly represent their thoughts, feelings, and interests can be a form

it provides individuals with a means to express their thoughts, emotions, and experiences in a creative and authentic way.
