Study Notes
Language Areas and Their Functioning
- Broca's area: responsible for speech production, located near the motor cortex, and connected to the motor area by the arcuate fasciculus
- Wernicke's area: responsible for speech comprehension, located in the temporal lobe, receives auditory stimuli, and connected to the auditory area by the arcuate fasciculus
- Reading process: information goes from the eyes to the visual area, then to the angular gyrus, Wernicke's area, and finally to Broca's area
Wernicke's Area, the Auditory Area, and Speech Understanding
- Wernicke's area is involved in the understanding of speech
- Wernicke's area is connected to the auditory area by fibers of the arcuate fasciculus
- Reading process: Wernicke's area activates the auditory form of the word
Language in Other Areas
- Although most language processing occurs in Broca's area, Wernicke's area, and the angular gyrus, some language functioning occurs elsewhere in the left hemisphere (and even in the right hemisphere)
- Abilities such as understanding intonation, emotional intentions, and social meaning are located outside of the traditional language areas
Right-Hemisphere Language Abilities
- The right-hemisphere is involved in language processing, particularly in understanding discourse
- Patients with brain damage to the right-hemisphere have impairments in narrative scripts, interpretation, integration of information, and understanding the text as a whole
- The right-hemisphere can take over left-hemisphere functions in cases of brain damage or language processing difficulties
The Bilingual Brain
- Two central issues in bilingualism: whether different languages are represented in different hemispheres, and whether the age at which a second language is learned affects lateralization
- Research findings show greater involvement of the right-hemisphere with bilinguals than monolinguals, and different degrees of recovery after brain damage or surgery
- Inconsistent evidence on the representation of languages in the brain, with some studies showing a clear neuroanatomical disassociation between languages
