What happens if the router that responded to the ARP request fails in Proxy ARP?
- The source host sends packets to another router on the network
- The source host stops sending packets to the failed router
- The source host continues to send packets to the same MAC address (correct)
- The source host sends ARP requests for the new router
What happens after the time-out period on the host in Proxy ARP?
What happens after the time-out period on the host in Proxy ARP?
- The host sends ARP requests to the failed router

Study Notes
Proxy ARP and First Hop Redundancy Protocols
- Proxy ARP allows a host to send traffic as if the destination device were on its own network segment
- If the router that responded to the ARP request fails, the source host continues to send packets to the same MAC address, which are then sent to another router on the network
- After a time-out period, the proxy ARP MAC address ages out of the ARP cache on the host
- The host can then make a new ARP request for the destination and get the address of another proxy ARP router
- During failover time, the host cannot send packets off of its subnet
- This imperfect situation leads to the need for a better solution
- First Hop Redundancy Protocols (FHRPs) are introduced as a solution
- FHRPs provide redundancy for the first hop, ensuring high availability in the network
- Common FHRPs include HSRP (Hot Standby Router Protocol), VRRP (Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol), and GLBP (Gateway Load Balancing Protocol)
- These protocols allow for seamless failover and load balancing in the network
- FHRPs ensure that if one router fails, another can seamlessly take over its role
- FHRPs improve network reliability and resiliency
