    Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

    • Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon: a dentist who has completed additional oral surgical studies and a hospital internship and residency program
    • Exodontia: extraction of a tooth
    • Surgical procedures in exodontia:
      • Single extraction: removal of one tooth during a procedure
      • Impacted teeth: occurs when a tooth is covered with tissues of the periodontium

    Types of Impaction

    • Clinical examination:
      • Palpation: application of finger pressure to body tissues, gingiva
      • Percussion: tapping of body tissue, tooth done with a handle upon the affected tooth

      • Transillumination: passage of light through object/tissue to reveal fractured tooth tissue

    Endodontics Treatment Procedures

    • Pulpectomy: surgical removal of pulp from tooth, also known as root canal treatment
    • Pulpotomy: partial excision of the dental pulp
    • Apicoectomy: surgical amputation of root apex

    Root Canal Treatment

    • Seven-step procedure:
      • Anesthesia: local injection to relieve pain during the procedure
      • Isolation: of the operative area to provide safety and assurance of an aseptic environment
      • Extirpation: removal of pulpal tissue after pulpal opening
      • Debridement: removal of necrotic pulpal tissue and cleaning
