Study Notes

Integers are numbers without fractions. They can be positive, negative, or zero. An integer is any whole number, including both positive and negative values. They are used in counting objects and measuring quantities. This article discusses properties of integers, basic arithmetic operations using them, and how they are displayed on number lines.

Properties of Integers

Integers have several key properties:

  1. Closure property: When you perform any operation on two integers, the result will always be another integer. For example, if we multiply any two integers, the product will also be an integer.
  2. Associative property: If you line up three integers from left to right and do the same operation over and over, you'll get the same integer each time regardless of parenthesizing.
  3. Commutative property: If you exchange the positions of two integers before performing an operation, the order won't change the result.
  4. Identity element: There are integers called the identity elements that don't affect the result when combined with any other integer through addition or multiplication.

Addition of integers follows the commutative property which states that changing the position of the terms being added does not change the sum.

Operations with Integers

There are four basic arithmetic operations involving integers: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Addition

Addition of two integers can be visualized by adding like terms on a number line. For example:

3 + 2 = 5

You start from the base value of 3 and count up to reach the next integer which is 2. In this case, you would have 3 + 2 = 5.

Subtraction

Subtracting one integer from another also follows the same concept on a number line. Let's take the following example:

5 - 2 = 3

Start from the higher value 5 and subtract the smaller value 2. The result will be 3.

Multiplication

Multiplication involves multiplying each digit of the first number by each digit of the second number using the distributive property. It works for both positive and negative integers.

For example:

(-2) × (-3) = 6

The multiplication process gives us a product that is positive.

Division

Division is a bit more complex because it involves converting fractions into decimals. For instance:

(-2) / (-3) = 2/3

When we divide two negative numbers, the quotient is a positive fraction.

Number Lines

Number lines are visual representations of the properties of integers. They help illustrate how addition, subtraction, and other operations work with integers. To display integers on a number line, start with the smallest integer you want to represent, then mark off equal intervals between consecutive integers until your desired range is covered.

For example, if we plot the integers from 2 to 7 on a number line, it would look like this:

    _______________
    | |
 2 | | 7
    | |
    |_______________|

This representation allows us to see the order of the integers and understand their relative positions.

Aprende sobre las propiedades clave de los enteros, las operaciones básicas como suma, resta, multiplicación y división, y cómo se muestran en líneas numéricas. Explora cómo los enteros se utilizan para contar objetos y medir cantidades.
