Properties of Parallelograms
-
Opposite Sides: In a parallelogram, any two opposite sides are congruent (equal in length). For example, in parallelogram HOME, HO is equal to ME, and HE is equal to MO.
-
Opposite Angles: Any two opposite angles in a parallelogram are congruent (equal in measure). In parallelogram JUST, angle TJU is equal to angle UST, and angle JTS is equal to angle SUJ.
-
Consecutive Angles: Any two consecutive angles in a parallelogram are supplementary (their measures add up to 180 degrees). In parallelogram LIVE, angle L and angle I are supplementary (m∠L + m∠I = 180°), as are angles I and V, V and E, and E and L.
-
Diagonals Bisect Each Other: The diagonals of a parallelogram bisect each other. This means they cut each other in half. In parallelogram CARE, AO is congruent to EO, and CO is congruent to RO.
-
Diagonals Create Congruent Triangles: A diagonal of a parallelogram divides the parallelogram into two congruent triangles. For example, in parallelogram LOVE, diagonal EO divides the parallelogram into congruent triangles LOE and VEO. Likewise in parallelogram LOVE, diagonal LV divides the parallelogram into congruent triangles LEV and VOL.
