Types of Pronouns and Their Functions
- Personal pronouns are the most commonly used type and are used to identify the speaker, the person being spoken to, and the person being spoken about.
- They are divided into first person (I, we), second person (you), and third person (he, she, it, they) singular and plural forms.
- Reflexive pronouns refer to the previous noun in the sentence, while intensive pronouns add emphasis to the preceding noun.
- Relative pronouns (who, whom, what, which, that) highlight another noun in the sentence and begin adjective clauses to describe the antecedent.
- Interrogative pronouns (who, which, what, whom, whoever, whichever) are used to ask questions.
- Impersonal pronouns (one, it) are used as substitutes for personal pronouns, especially in formal writing and speech.
- Indefinite pronouns (another, both, all, anybody, few, each, neither, someone, something, everything, most, more) substitute for a noun and need descriptive language to identify the noun they replace.
- Demonstrative pronouns (this, that, these, those) point out something and are used to identify or distinguish a specific noun.
- Subjective pronouns refer to the subject of a sentence or clause, while objective pronouns refer to a noun being acted on by a verb or a pronoun in a prepositional phrase.
- The Latin root word for pronouns is pronomen, which means "for or in place of name."
- Greek scholar Dionysus Thrax recorded the eight parts of speech, including pronouns, in 170-90 B.C.E.
- Pronouns are words that stand in for or replace nouns.
