Study Notes
Equality and Human Rights
- To achieve full and effective equality, it is necessary to treat people differently according to their different circumstances, assert their equal worth, and enhance their capabilities to participate in society as equals.
- The right to equality requires positive actions, including legislative, administrative, and policy measures to overcome past disadvantage and accelerate progress towards equality for particular groups.
Social Equality and Brain Function
- Egalitarian behavior is associated with the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) and insula (Dawes et al., 2012).
- There is a distinction between equality of outcomes and equality of opportunities (Aoki et al., 2015).
International Human Rights Law
- The right to equality before the law and the protection of all persons against discrimination are fundamental norms of international human rights law.
- In 2015, the United Nations adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which includes 17 goals with 169 targets, grounded in the Declaration of Human Rights and international law.
2030 Agenda
- The 2030 Agenda aims to empower vulnerable people, including those in employment, occupation, vocational training, membership of employer and employee organizations, social protection, education, and access to goods and services.
- The agenda recognizes the positive contribution of migrants to inclusive growth and sustainable development, and calls for safe, orderly, and regular migration involving full respect for human rights and the humane treatment of migrants.
- The agenda also promotes inter-cultural understanding, tolerance, mutual respect, and an ethic of global citizenship and shared responsibility.
Gender Diversity
- Understanding the difference between gender and sex is important in various professions.
- The 2030 Agenda includes people of all genders, including children, youth, persons with disabilities, people living with HIV/AIDS, older persons, indigenous peoples, refugees, and internally displaced persons and migrants.
Migration and Refugees
- International migration is a multi-dimensional reality that requires coherent and comprehensive responses.
- The 2030 Agenda recognizes the right of migrants to return to their country of citizenship, and calls for States to ensure that their returning nationals are duly received.
