History of Physiotherapy
- 460 BC: Hippocrates and Hector, later Galen, were the first practitioners of physical therapy, using massage and hydrotherapy.
- 18th century: Orthopaedic developments led to the creation of gymnasticons and exercises to treat gout.
- 1813: Per Henrik Ling, the "father of Swedish gymnastics", founded the Royal Central Institute of Gymnastics (RCIG) for massage, exercises, and manipulation.
- 1813: The term "Sjukgymnast" was used to describe someone involved in gymnastics for those who are ill.
- 1887: Physiotherapists were officially registered by the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare.
- 1894: The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy was formed by Lucy Marianne Robinson, Rosalind Paget, Elizabeth Anne Manley, and Margaret Dora Palmer, initially known as the Society of Trained Masseuses.
American Physiotherapy Development
- 1916-1918: During the polio outbreak, American orthopedic surgeons started treating children with disabilities, employing women trained in physical education, massage, and exercises.
- 1917: Rehabilitation therapy became widely performed, and practitioners were called "Reconstruction Aides".
- 1921: The first physical therapy research was published in "PT Review".
- 1921: Mary McMillan, a physical therapy aide, formed the AWPTA (later called APTA, American Physical Therapy Association), earning her the title "Mother of Physical Therapy".
- 1924: The Spring Foundation promoted physical therapy in the treatment of polio.
- 1940s: The main physio practices were massage, traction, and exercises.
- 1950s: Manipulation for spine practice was introduced.
- 1974: The ortho specialty in physio was formed in APTA, and the International Federation of Orthopaedic Manipulative Therapy was established.
