Study Notes
Production of Carbon Ferrochrome
- Increasing the process temperature helps to decrease heat losses during continuous charging in a patch type furnace.
Raw Materials and Power Consumption
- Chrome ore: 77-78% with a grain size of 50-60 mm
- Reducer: 14-20% Nut-coke with a grain size of up to 25 mm
- Quartzite: 2-3% with a grain size of 30-50 mm, used as a fluxing material
- Iron chips: 5-15% of the charge
- Electrod mass: 27-30 kg/ton alloy
Reduction of Oxides
- Oxides contained in the ore are reduced by carbon at a temperature of 1240°C
- Reduction of chrome oxide by carbon: Cr2O3 + 3C = 2Cr + 3CO, ∆H = + 195510 Cal
- Stable carbides are formed during the reduction of chrome oxide by carbon at a temperature of 1129°C: Cr2O3 + 27/7 C = 2/7Cr7C3 + 3CO, ∆H = + 182919 Cal
- Reduction of iron oxide: FeO + C = Fe + CO
Uses of Ferrochrome Alloys
- Used for alloying and not for deoxidation
- Improves the mechanical and chemical properties of steels
- Increases the steel's elasticity and hardness
- Increases the chemical corrosion resistance for seawater
- Increases the acid resistance with Si addition
Physicochemical Properties of Chromium
- Atomic weight: 52
- Melting point: 1930°C
- Specific gravity: 7.19
- Boiling point: 2470°C
- Forms solid solutions with Fe and intermetallic compound (FeCr) of 13% Cr, which causes the steel to gain passivity against corrosion
