Study Notes
Batch, Semi-Batch, and Continuous Processes
- Batch: All material is added at the start, and all products are removed at the end.
- Continuous: Material continuously enters and leaves the system throughout the cycle.
- Semi-Batch: Processes that fall between batch and continuous.
- Either material enters continuously, but product is not removed.
- Or, the system starts full and products are continuously removed.
Steady State and Transient Systems
- Steady State: Process variables (temperature, pressure, flow, etc.) remain constant over time.
- Transient System: Time is an important variable, and process variables can vary over time.
Black Box Representation
- Focuses on inputs and outputs of the system, not internal details.
- Useful for analyzing a system without needing to understand its inner workings.
Open and Closed Systems
- Closed System: No material crosses the system boundary.
- Changes can occur inside the system, but material doesn't enter or exit.
- Open System: Material crosses the system boundary.
- Can experience changes within the system, with material entering, leaving, or accumulating.
