Process Management

• Traditional organization vs. process-oriented organization:
  • Traditional organization has a vertical or pyramidal structure, focused on departmental needs, and local goals.
  • Process-oriented organization has a flat and horizontal structure, focused on customer needs, and creation of value.
• Process management involves identifying and improving processes, managing by processes, and evaluating performance through indicators.

Typology of Processes

• There are three main types of macro processes in an organization:
  • Understand the process
  • Communicate to those involved in the process
  • Identify, analyze, and prevent problems, and redesign and automate to improve the process

Modeling

• Modeling involves giving shape to a process according to a reference or model.
• It accurately presents the image of figures and fits to a model.
• Examples of modeling languages include:
  • EPC (Event-driven process chains)
  • UML (Unified modeling language)
  • IDEF (Integrated definition for function modeling)

Process Modeling Languages

• EPC is a technique developed in the 1980s in Germany, based on Petri nets, and explains the process through "State-Transition-New State."
• UML is a family of 13 types of diagrams, created for systems development, but used to model processes.
• BPMN (Business Process Model and Notation) is a complex language with over 100 symbols, used to model business processes.

BPMN

• BPMN includes events, activities, and gateways.
• Events are something that happens instantly, while activities are units of work with a certain duration.
• BPMN uses symbols such as circles with a thin border for initial events and circles with a thick border for final events.
• Tokens are used to identify the state of each instance in a process.
