Study Notes

Basic Concepts

  • Experiment: An action or situation that can produce a set of outcomes.
  • Outcome: A specific result of an experiment.
  • Sample Space: The set of all possible outcomes of an experiment.

Events

  • Event: A set of outcomes of an experiment.
  • Simple Event: An event that contains only one outcome.
  • Compound Event: An event that contains more than one outcome.

Probability

  • Probability: A number between 0 and 1 that represents the likelihood of an event occurring.
  • Theoretical Probability: The probability of an event calculated based on the number of favorable outcomes and the total number of possible outcomes.
  • Experimental Probability: The probability of an event based on repeated trials of an experiment.

Rules of Probability

  • Rule of Addition: The probability of the union of two events is the sum of their individual probabilities minus the probability of their intersection.
  • Rule of Multiplication: The probability of the intersection of two events is the product of their individual probabilities.

Types of Events

  • Independent Events: Events where the occurrence of one event does not affect the probability of the other event.
  • Dependent Events: Events where the occurrence of one event affects the probability of the other event.
  • Mutually Exclusive Events: Events that cannot occur simultaneously.
  • Complementary Events: Events where one event is the negation of the other.

Conditional Probability

  • Conditional Probability: The probability of an event occurring given that another event has occurred.
  • Bayes' Theorem: A formula for calculating conditional probability.
