    Study Notes

    Principles of Flight (PF)

    • The idea of human flight has engaged the thought of many men since the beginning of history, with myths, religious beliefs, and legends of flying in ancient civilizations such as Indian mythology, Egyptian and Assyrian winged deities, and Greek and Roman mythology.
    • The first scientific venture in aviation was made in China in the fourth century B.C., leading to the invention of the kite by the sixth century B.C.
    • In 1890, Lilienthal in Germany started riding the air in gliders, inspiring the Wright brothers in America to solve practical problems of aviation.
    • The power airplane took ten years (1895-1905) to emerge from the glider, perfected by the Wright Brothers, and in 1906, the Wright Flyer III emerged, capable of banking, turning, circling, and flying for over half an hour.

    Development of Aviation

    • The development of aviation includes the invention of the kite, gliders, balloons, parachutes, and airships.
    • In 1852, the stream-driven airship became feasible, and Santos and Dumont led the development of lighter-than-air aircraft.
    • The power-driven airplane took ten years to emerge from the glider.
