What is the basic idea behind the term 'cloud computing'?

Users access hardware and software resources as needed over the internet.

According to NIST, what is a key characteristic of cloud computing?

Users can rapidly provision and release computing resources with minimal management effort.

How do cloud computing providers achieve significant economies of scale?

By using a diverse set of hardware configurations and security measures.

What is a key benefit of virtualization in cloud computing?

Users don't have to worry about the physical conditions or compatibility of their hardware.

What is a key characteristic of the 'elasticity' of cloud computing?

Users can easily add or remove computing resources from their cloud account.

What is a key difference between cloud computing and on-premise computing?

Cloud computing allows users to access resources on-demand, while on-premise computing requires pre-provisioned resources.

What is one key advantage of cloud computing for large enterprises?

They can offload some activities to cloud-based systems

Study Notes

Cloud Computing

  • Cloud computing refers to Internet-based computing where users can access hardware and software resources as needed.
  • Users access services based on their requirements without regard to where the services are hosted.

Definition of Cloud Computing

  • NIST defines cloud computing as "a model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction."

Principles of Cloud Computing

  • Resource pooling: Cloud computing firms achieve significant economies of scale by assembling a big network of servers and hard drives, and using the same configurations, security measures, and other measures for them.
  • Virtualization: Users don't have to worry about the physical conditions of their hardware or about it being compatible with other pieces of hardware.
  • Elasticity: Users can add hard disk space or server bandwidth right away.
  • Automatic/easy resource deployment: Users only need to choose the categories and options that best suit their needs.
  • Metered billing: Only the usage made by the user is charged (Pay-as-you-go cloud computing, PAYG cloud computing).
  • Measured services: On-demand access to cloud resources.

Benefits of Cloud Computing

  • Large enterprises can offload some of their activities to cloud-based systems.
  • Small enterprises and start-ups can afford to translate their ideas into business results more quickly, without excessive up-front costs.
  • System developers can concentrate on the business logic rather than dealing with the complexity of infrastructure management and scalability.
  • End users can have their documents accessible from everywhere and any device.

Cloud Computing Providers and Customers

  • Featured customers: Emaar, BMW Group, PayPal, Airbus, Blue Apron, Netflix, and others.
  • Cloud computing providers: Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform (GCP).

Test your knowledge on the five principles of cloud computing, including automatic resource deployment, metered billing, resource pooling, cloud elasticity, and measured services. Explore how large enterprises can benefit from offloading some of their activities to the cloud.
