    • A plan or drawing used to show the look and function of a building, garment, or object before it is made
    • The proper arrangement of art elements to create something beautiful
    • There are 5 main principles: Harmony, Rhythm, Balance, Proportion, and Emphasis

    1) Harmony

    • Produces an impression of unity
    • Achieved through the selection and arrangement of consistent objects or ideas
    • Order and every orderly arrangement are harmonious
    • Creating harmony considers both appearance and use
    • Harmony is a visually pleasing agreement among the design elements

    1.1 Harmony of Lines and Shapes

    • Transitional lines: Smoothly connect opposing lines
    • Opposing lines: Lines that intersect each other and form angles
    • Repetition: Repeating patterns creates a sense of harmony

    1.2 Harmony of Size

    • Good proportion
    • Equal space occupied by figures
    • Visual harmony from repetitions of sizes and relationships of elements

    1.3 Harmony of Color

    4) Proportion

    5) Emphasis

    • Can be done through outline, form, color, texture, size, idea, or value
    • Methods of creating emphasis through grouping, decoration, color contrast, plain space, and unusual elements
