The Evolution of Leadership in the Philippines
The Philippines has been governed by several individuals who held the position of President throughout its complex history. From the revolutionary period to the present day, these leaders have shaped the nation's destiny and helped shape its identity.
Emilio Aguinaldo (January 23, 1899 - March 23, 1901)
Emilio Aguinaldo is considered the first president of the Philippines by some scholars due to his role in declaring independence from Spain on June 12, 1898, although he was not officially sworn into office until January 23, 1899. He led the fight against Spanish rule and founded the revolutionary government during the Battle of Imus. However, Aguinaldo's presidency was short-lived as he was captured and interned on August 1, 1901, ending the revolution.
