Study Notes

Present Simple and Present Continuous Tenses

  • The present simple tense is used to talk about things we do regularly, such as habits, routines, and general truths.
  • The present continuous tense is used to talk about things we are doing now, or things that are in progress at the moment of speaking.

Forming the Present Simple Tense

  • For the third person singular (he, she, it), we add -s or -es to the base form of the verb to form the present simple tense.

Negative Form of the Present Simple Tense

  • For I, you, we, and they, we use do not (don't) or does not (doesn't) to form the negative of the present simple tense.

Negative Form of the Present Continuous Tense

  • We use am not, is not, or are not to form the negative of the present continuous tense.
