Study Notes
Present Simple and Progressive, Including Stative Verbs
-
The present simple tense describes habitual actions, facts, and general truths.
-
It's formed using the base form of the verb for most subjects, and adding "-s" or "-es" for third-person singular subjects.
-
Example: She eats breakfast every morning. He works for a large company.
-
The present progressive tense describes actions happening now, at this moment, or in a continuous period around now.
-
It's formed using the present tense form of "to be" + the -ing form of the verb.
-
Example: They are playing tennis at the moment. She is studying engineering right now.
-
Stative verbs describe states, conditions, feelings, and opinions. They are not usually used in the progressive form.
-
Examples: know, like, love, have, believe, understand, think, see, hear, want, need.
-
Example: I understand your point of view. (Not "I am understanding...")
Past Simple and 'Used To'
-
The past simple tense describes actions that happened and finished at a specific time in the past.
-
It's formed in various ways, often using a regular or irregular past tense form of the verb.
-
Example: I worked as a waiter last summer. They visited London a year ago.
-
Examples of irregular verbs: go - went, see - saw, have - had
-
Note that verbs like "be" have variations for past tense, such as "was" and "were".
-
The phrase "used to" describes actions or states that were habitual in the past but no longer occur.
-
This implies a change from the past to the present.
-
Example: My uncle used to smoke a lot. (He doesn't smoke now.)
Future Simple and 'Be Going To'
-
The future simple tense describes actions that will occur in the future.
-
Mostly it's formed by using auxiliary verb "will" + the base form of the verb.
-
Example: I will go to the party tonight. They will help you with that task in the new quarter.
-
The modal verb "be going to" is used to express intentions or plans based on current evidence, or predictions for the actions set to happen.
-
It's formed by using "be" (will be) + the base form of the verb.
-
Example: I am going to start my new diet next week. (Based on the intention today). They are going to win the tournament this year. (Based on current evidence, perhaps their strong team record).
